The German Tenants‘ Organisation – The umbrella organisation for all German tenants’ associations

The German Tenants' Organisation is structured “from the bottom up”. As a tenant, you become a member of your local tenants' association, which in turn is affiliated to the respective state association. The regional associations are members of the German Tenants‘ Association (DMB) in Berlin – the umbrella organisation for around 350 local tenants’ associations, which represent your interests nationwide with around 500 advice centres. Over 3 million tenants are organised in the DMB.

Under one roof since 1990

Tenants' associations have existed as self-help organisations for over 100 years. The first tenants' association was founded in Dresden in 1868. The first umbrella organisation was founded as early as 1900, following in the tradition of the German Tenants' Association (founded in 1951). Since October 1990, the regional associations and tenants' organisations of the former GDR have also been under the umbrella of the DMB.

Federal

The German Tenants' Association has a federal structure: The legally and organisationally independent tenants‘ associations are grouped together regionally in 16 state associations, which support the German Tenants’ Association as a federal association. The organisation is financed almost exclusively by membership fees. Around 1,300 full-time employees and around 2,500 volunteers work in the German Tenants‘ Association, the regional associations and the tenants’ associations.

Non-partisan

The German Tenants' Association is a non-partisan organisation and politically neutral. Its governing and decision-making bodies are the twelve-member Federal Executive Board, the Advisory Board, in which the state associations are represented, and the German Tenants‘ Conference, the biennial general meeting to which the state associations and tenants’ organisations send 400 delegates. The tasks of the General Assembly include electing the Federal Executive Board and deciding on the guidelines for the association's policy.
