Operating costs

Online operating cost check

Every year, the DMB publishes the operating costs index based on the data collected in the year before last and also compares it with the data from the previous year.

The aim of the operating cost index is to create transparency for people looking for accommodation, tenants and landlords. The operating cost index provides information on how high operating costs are on average across Germany, the country or in a city. Why don't you compare it with your bill?

However, unlike rent indexes, operating cost indexes are not legal instruments that can be used to check operating cost statements in a legally binding manner.

On the website of the German Tenants' Association (DMB), you can have your operating costs assessed free of charge and compared with the national average – both in terms of the total costs and individual cost items (such as heating, insurance, waste disposal costs, etc.) for your residential property. Advice on how costs can be reduced rounds off the consultation. Please have your utility bill from the last billing period ready! A service from DMB and co2online.

Heating level

Is your heating energy consumption average? Do you perhaps produce particularly little climate-damaging CO2? Or does your heating bill end up being too high?

Similar to the rent index for rent, the nationwide heating index provides statistical comparative values for heating costs, heating energy consumption and the resulting CO2 emissions. This helps you to save costs and at the same time makes an important contribution to achieving climate protection targets.

Compare the values on your heating bill with the Heizspiegel values:

The new heating index also takes into account the year of construction of the building. This allows consumers to categorise the energy efficiency of their home even more accurately. These heating index comparison values by year of construction are only available online.

Older versions of the nationwide heating index can be found under CO2-online – Heating index for download.

Heating expertise

If the values are high, you can also apply for a heating survey. The report takes a closer look at the energy-related condition of your home and building and suggests individual steps for improvement.
