On May 19, 2026, the new joint series on the state of the housing market kicked off with Cologne-based rent activist Kalle Gerigk, who has been fighting for many years against displacement, for the right to housing, and against homelessness—as an activist with “Right to the City” and chairman of “Homeless People with a Future, Inc.”
In the main hall of the DGB building, he answered questions from Hans Jörg Depel and Judith Gövert, as well as from the audience.
Who is Kalle Gerigk? Why is the issue of affordable housing so important to him? What are his concrete ideas and concepts for improving the dire situation in the housing market?
About the new event series: The housing market in Cologne has been strained for years—rising rents, displacement, and a lack of affordable housing characterize the situation for many people in our city. The new event series “An Hour on the Housing Issue” by the Cologne Tenants’ Association and DGB Cologne-Bonn addresses the challenges of the housing market. A guest speaker will present their proposed solutions for improving the situation in Cologne’s housing market.
