A strong community
With over 66,000 members, the Cologne Tenants‘ Association is the third largest within the German Tenants’ Association. ‘The high number of new members is also due to our strong customer focus. Purpose of our organisation

We actively protect the interests of our members in rental and housing matters. We also endeavour to unite all tenants in Cologne and the surrounding area – with the following objectives:

  • Realisation of a social and ecological housing and rental policy in municipalities, the federal state and the federal government, the promotion of a social and ecological housing industry and the improvement of housing conditions
  • Safeguarding the rights and interests of tenants and leaseholders in all areas of the rental and housing sector
  • Protecting tenants in housing matters and against ineffective and unreasonable contractual conditions
  • Idealistic promotion of the non-profit housing, housing estate and co-operative sector
  • Protecting the interests of tenants through information and public relations work

The bodies of our association are the Executive Board, the Advisory Board and the General Assembly. All information on the tasks and election of our bodies can be found in our Articles of Association.

Membership figures and counselling topics

The number of our members has risen continuously in recent years: We currently have over 68,500 members, compared to 56,700 in 2000 and 45,300 in 1990. We most frequently provide advice on utility bills, followed by the topics of housing defects and deposit repayments. Discover the details!

Tenant protection EG – Secure and good housing in a co-operative

In 1925, the Cologne Tenants' Association, then known as the “Mieterschutzverein Köln”, founded the housing and building cooperative Mieterschutz eG. The aim was and is to offer the members of the co-operative sensibly calculated usage fees by constructing and providing modern flats and to rule out terminations due to personal use.
